Brief Description:  This course will consist of 54 hours of theory, instruction, observation, practice and evaluation designed to prepare elementary teachers to present student-centered reading and spelling instruction that incorporates an Orton-Gillingham based approach.  An understanding of the phases of language and literacy development along with various categories of reading difficulties is an important component.  This course is designed to provide teachers with a thorough understanding of the English language including its history, phonemes, graphemes, morphemes, syllable types and spelling patterns.  Also included is an in-depth exploration of non-phonetic words and methods for teaching them to students.  Emphasis is on the appropriate evalution of student strengths and needs and on the efficient and accurate implementation of visual, auditory and blending components that represent a systematic and explicit approach to reading and spelling instruction.  Multiple texts, professional articles, and instructional manipulatives form the basis of course materials.
